are pointed out and the transmural nature of the inflammation in Crohn's disease emphasized, also the importance of anal lesions, which occurred in 81 % of the cases. Absence of the typical sarcoid reaction on one histological examination does not rule out Crohn's disease. This combined clinical and pathological study makes it clear that Crohn's disease is a different disease from ulcerative colitis and that the two do not occur together in the same patient.

Excisional surgery with ileostomy for Crohn's colitis with particular reference to factors affecting recurrence.

This paper reports the indications for, and results of, excision of the large intestine with ileostomy in 73 patients with Crohn's colitis who have been followed for a mean of nine years since resection. Sixty-four of them are still alive and all but two of the survivors are now in good health. However, 23 (33%) have developed recurrent Crohn's disease since resection. This is higher than that r...

Safety and usefulness of balloon endoscopy in Crohn's disease patients with postoperative ileal lesions.

Surgery is required for most Crohn's disease (CD) patients due to strictures and/or penetrating disease (e.g., fistula, abscess and perforation).1,2 Even if surgical resection is performed, this does not represent “curative” treatment because clinical recurrences are often seen after surgery. Previous studies indicated that 25–35% of CD patients needed re-surgery at 5 years and up to 40–70% at ...

Crohn's Disease with Carcinoma of the Colon

Crohn's disease is not usually regarded as a premalignant state. Recent reviews of the literature1' 2 make scant reference to an association of regional enteritis with carcinoma. However, at the World Congress of Gastro-enterology, I958, Crohn observed that he had seen two cases of carcinoma of the small intestine co-existing with regional enteritis.3 Rare cases of carcinoma arising in patients...

Although in many textbooks (Lipman and Massie, 1960; MacBryde, 1965; Shulman, 1966) Crohn's disease is listed among the causes of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy an extensive search of the literature has failed to reveal an adequately documented case. We report here a 17-year-old boy who has diffuse Crohn's disease of the small and large intestine associated with marked periosteal new bone format...
